Setting Up Guest Wi-Fi for Visitors

Guests can get online without touching your kids' rules. Here's how to treat visitor devices so they stay useful but separate.

The guest approach

When friends and relatives visit, you don't need to hand out your main Wi-Fi password. If you run a separate guest network on your existing router, visitors who join it bypass the gateway entirely — so keep in mind it's an unfiltered path. The simpler Guardian approach: let guests join the Guardian network as guest-assigned devices.

How guest assignment works

On the Devices page, mark a visitor's device as a guest device. Guest devices get baseline protection — malware and adult-content blocking — without being governed by any child's bedtime or category rules, so a visiting teen's phone won't suddenly shut off at your kids' bedtime.

Good habits

  • Rename guest devices with the visitor's name so they're easy to spot and clean up later.
  • Remove stale guests when the visit ends — the device list is your inventory of who can reach your network.
  • Never share the admin portal with guests; the Wi-Fi password is all they need.
