Assigning Devices to the Right Profile
Discovered devices start as unassigned, which limits what rules apply to them. Learn how to assign each device to a profile so the right rules stick.
Why assignment matters
New devices that join the network appear as unassigned. Unassigned devices get only baseline protection — they're not governed by any child's bedtime or category rules. Assigning a device to a profile is what puts it under a specific person's rules.
How to assign
Open the Devices page, find the device (recognized by name, manufacturer, or MAC address), and choose its profile. Phones and tablets belong to a person; a shared smart TV can be assigned to an adult profile so household streaming keeps working while kids' devices stay filtered.
Tips for a clean device list
- Rename devices as you assign them — "Jordan's iPad" is easier to manage than "apple-device-a1b2".
- Watch for randomized MACs: some phones appear as new devices after rejoining; our randomized-MAC article explains the fix.
- Revisit after birthdays: when a child outgrows their tier, change the profile's tier rather than rebuilding rules.
Reassigning a device takes effect within a minute — no restart needed.
